What Is an On-Grid (Grid-Connected) System?
On-grid systems operate connected to the electricity grid. During sunny hours, the electricity produced first covers the facility's own consumption; any surplus can be exported to the grid depending on system type and regulations. During hours without sun, the facility draws electricity from the grid as normal.
Since no battery is required, this setup can usually be installed at a lower upfront cost and is the preferred choice for the vast majority of grid-connected homes, businesses, and facilities.
What Is an Off-Grid (Independent) System?
Off-grid systems are not connected to the grid; they store the electricity they generate in batteries, making it usable even when there's no sun. This is a practical solution for village homes, farms, and facilities in rural or remote areas where grid connection is unavailable or not economical.
Battery capacity in off-grid systems must be carefully sized to consumption needs; undersizing can lead to energy shortages on sunless days.
Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems keep the grid connection while also including battery storage. This setup provides resilience against grid outages while allowing surplus generated energy to be stored in the battery for later use.
