What sets Gündoğmuş apart from Antalya's other districts is that it's a high mountain district — far from the sea yet within the Mediterranean region — spanning 1,175 km² at an average elevation of about 912 meters. The Alara Stream, running east-west, and forested mountain terrain define its characteristic landscape.

With a 2023 population of 8,259, Gündoğmuş is a district that continually loses population to outward migration; livestock farming (especially in rural neighborhoods) and beekeeping hold an important place in its economy. With settlements spread far apart across this terrain, grid lines can be distant from some settlements, raising both outage risk and operating costs.
