Ağlasun's Profile: In the Shadow of Sagalassos

Built on the slopes of Akdağ at 1,500-1,700 meters, the ancient city of Sagalassos lies within Ağlasun district. Captured by Alexander the Great in 334 BC, the city became the imperial cult center of the Roman province of Pisidia, adorned with monumental structures such as the Antonine Fountain, baths, a theater, the Neon Library, a macellum, and the Temple of Antoninus Pius. An important ceramics-production center for at least a thousand years, it has been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List on that basis.

Systematic excavations, begun in 1990 under Marc Waelkens, continue today — making Ağlasun Burdur's most important archaeology and cultural-tourism center.
