Keçiborlu's Profile: One of the World's Rare Natural Sulfur Mines

Keçiborlu is home to one of only two sources in the world where sulfur occurs naturally as ore. Operated from the early 1900s until 1994, the Keçiborlu Sulfur Mines produced 125,000-175,000 tons of sulfur annually at their peak, most of it used in fertilizer production.

Run during the Republican era by Sümerbank and later Etibank, the mine closed in 1994 but can still be visited today as industrial heritage — adding an industrial-history tourism dimension to the district alongside agriculture.
