The Core Components of a Solar System
A solar power plant consists of several main components working together:
- Solar panels (photovoltaic modules) — convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity,
- Inverter — converts the DC electricity from the panels into alternating current (AC), usable by the grid and most appliances,
- Mounting structure — securely fixes the panels to the roof or ground,
- LV distribution panel and cabling — safely carries the generated electricity into the facility,
- Metering — measures electricity produced and drawn from/fed into the grid.
How Do Solar Panels Generate Electricity?
Solar panels use photovoltaic cells to convert photons in sunlight into electric current — a process called the photovoltaic effect. The electricity from the panel is direct current (DC) and cannot be used directly by the grid or most appliances.
This is why every system includes an inverter: it converts DC electricity into usable AC. The AC output can cover the facility's own consumption; depending on system type, any surplus can be exported to the grid or stored in a battery.
